Make Multiplication and Division Fact Families Fun!

Teaching multiplication and division fact families can feel a little… repetitive.

Let’s be honest—fact families aren’t always super exciting.

Sure, they’re important. They help students see the connection between multiplication and division. But without a little creativity, they can feel more like memorization drills than meaningful learning.

If you’ve ever found yourself reaching for “just one more worksheet” or watching your students tune out during fact family review, it might be time to switch things up.

Why Fact Families Matter in Third Grade

Fact families help students understand the relationship between multiplication and division. They go beyond memorizing facts and encourage flexible thinking—something that sets your students up for success as math gets more complex.

Here are a few fun, low-prep ways to make fact families more engaging—and yes, I’ve got a FREE classroom-tested craft to help you get started.

4 Simple and Fun Tips for Teaching Fact Families

1. Use Hands-on Tools to Model the Math

Before jumping into equations, let students build the math with manipulatives. Use counters or cubes to show, for example, 3 groups of 4 = 12. Then show how the same pieces can be split into 3 equal groups (12 ÷ 3 = 4). When students see how the numbers connect, the concept of a fact family becomes much more clear—and way more engaging.

2. Incorporate Quick Partner Games

Turn fact family review into a 5-minute partner game! One student rolls dice to get two factors, and the other students builds the fact family with those numbers. Students switch roles and see how many fact families they can write in 5 minutes. It’s a simple way to build fluency and collaboration with partners.

3. Bring in Movement

Write fact family numbers on cards and scatter them around the room or playground. In teams, students find three numbers that make a fact family, then race back to write all four equations. It’s a great way to get energy out while building fluency!

4. Make It Sweet With a Themed Craft (FREE Download!)

Want a fun, purposeful activity that doubles as a math review and a bulletin board display? I’ve got you covered with this FREE Scooping Up Multiplication and Division Fact Family Craft.

Students build their own ice cream cones with each scoop representing a different fact in their fact family. It’s hands-on, easy to differentiate, and perfect for math centers, early finishers, or a fun independent review activity.
